Is Newborn Photography Safe for my Baby?
London Ontario Newborn and baby Photographer

Capturing the early moments of a newborn’s life allows families to preserve valuable memories of the innocence and fragility of their newest member. Ensuring the safety of the baby during these sessions is crucial. As a newborn photographer, I understand the delicate nature of working with infants and the necessary precautions I must follow in every newborn session.

The ideal time for newborn photography sessions is within the first 14 days of the baby’s life. During this period, newborns are more likely to sleep soundly and be more cooperative during the session, however; this is not always the case. In every session I carefully select the props I will use depending on the age of every infant. There will be some props I won’t be able to use if I know the baby won’t be secure. Being aware of the type of poses and props I can use with every baby depending on their state of awareness is part of my expertise to prioritize their safety.

Another aspect I have in mind is to provide a comfortable and warm environment. I ensure that my studio is adequately heated as newborns are unable to regulate their body temperature effectively. I also use wraps, blankets to provide a cozy atmosphere for babies.

I also prioritize the comfort and well-being of babies by using supportive and safe props, such as soft pillows or cushions that ensure the baby’s head and neck are adequate supported. Moreover, I always try to place the baby in positions where the baby is well supported and comfortable, being gentle when handling them and listening for cues of discomfort.

The lens I use for newborn sessions is a lens that allows me to be close to the baby in case baby moves but parents or guardians present during the photoshoot can be great contributors to babies’ safety. Parents can provide comfort, assist with positioning, and ensure the baby’s well-being while I take a shoot or I reach something out.

In addition, I understand how fragile newborns are and how crucial it is to maintain high hygiene standards. That is why after every session I clean and wash all the props, and any surfaces that came into contact with the baby so when another baby comes to my studio everything is disinfected. During the session I regularly sanitize my hands and use face mask to prevent babies from being exposed to any virus or any possible health issue.

By practicing safe posing techniques and upholding hygiene standards, I try to create lasting images that families can cherish without compromising the safety and well-being of their precious newborns.
